Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

With an impact rating, strong materials, black oxide coating, and a price tag under $50, there's little doubt that both automotive and construction Pros will be interested in this Dewalt socket set.

There’s no tool combination more iconic of a garage than a ratchet/impact wrench and socket set. From small to large, they quite literally deal with the nuts and bolts of automotive and industrial applications. We may wonder if the world really needs another set with so many manufacturers in the market (answer: yes, of course!), but when it’s DeWalt taking a crack at them, we are all ears. DeWalt recently released a full line of toolsets for mechanics among which is the 23-piece DeWalt Impact Sockets, a 1/2-inch impact-rated socket set with SAE sizes ranging from 7/16- to 1-inch and Metric sizes ranging from 13- to 24mm (but excluding 20- and 23mm). Let’s take a closer look.

The DeWalt Impact Sockets include a 5-inch long extension, 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch impact driver adapter, and a 72-tooth, single pawl ratchet with push button detent. That might all sound relatively unremarkable, but a look under the hood reveals some slick design.

DeWalt used 440 steel known for excellent bang-for-the-buck strength. The entire set boasts black oxide coating for added corrosion resistance. A close look at the milling inside shows that the sockets aren’t quick hexagonal – at each corner, there’s a curved area which is DeWalt’s DirectTorque technology designed to grip the fastener more securely and prevent rounding.

When you consider that the DeWalt Impact Sockets have a full lifetime warranty and a price tag under $50, it’s hard not to consider one for the shop and one for the truck.

Overall, the DeWalt Impact Sockets will appeal both to automotive and construction Pros, especially with its impact rating and impact adapter which could easily be used on the jobsite. That DeWalt’s bread and butter are dialed into the construction market should give us a clue about the company’s belief in the set’s crossover appeal, too. The black oxide’s corrosion resistance will also work well when the set is outside and not protected by an auto shop’s building.

This DeWalt DWMT74739 socket set is an excellent offering for a few different trades. While we’ve only had time to get some quick work done so far, Tim Johnson over at Shop Tool Reviews has done a full review after spending several weeks using these tools.
