Live updates from the third practice of Bears training camp

2022-07-29 22:26:54 By : Ms. Crystal Ou

The Chicago Bears returned to Halas Hall on Friday morning for their third practice of training camp.

With media and fans in attendance, there’s plenty to keep an eye on during Friday’s practice, which will be another non-padded workout. That includes developments with the offensive line following Lucas Patrick’s apparent injury and Teven Jenkins being a no-show on Thursday. Justin Fields will be looking to build on a strong Thursday practice, where his connection with Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet was on display.

Here are some instant observations from those in attendance at the Bears’ third practice of training camp:

#Bears C Lucas Patrick is expected to require surgery on his right hand. This early in training camp, there is likely optimism he will be available sooner rather than later, perhaps before the season opener.

— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) July 29, 2022

Bears C Lucas Patrick left practice yesterday with a broken thumb, a source said, but early projection is he’s back by the opener.

— Jason Lieser (@JasonLieser) July 29, 2022

Practice No. 3 has started at Halas Hall. Do not see OL Teven Jenkins at this point.

— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) July 29, 2022

Looks like a vet day for Cody Whitehair and Lucas Patrick is likely out with the thumb, so the first OL starting out warmups is LT Reiff, LG Zach Thomas, C Doug Kramer, RG Ja’Tyre Carter, RT Borom

I don’t see Teven Jenkins yet either.

Another apparent injury on the Bears line:

Cody Whitehair not participating in individual drills… on the stationary bike instead.

— Alex Shapiro (@AlexShapiroNBCS) July 29, 2022

#Bears guard Cody Whitehair is on the exercise bike and does not appear to be participating in individual drills.

Tight end Ryan Griffin is also over there.

— Sean Hammond (@sean_hammond) July 29, 2022

Also not seeing Thomas Graham Jr. with the rest of the defensive backs.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 29, 2022

Overseeing O-line drills on one side is GM Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. On the other side surveying drills is asst GM Ian Cunningham.

With center Lucas Patrick (broken thumb) now sidelined for training camp, it will be interesting to see what unfolds at center for the Bears the rest of this week and beyond. It was rookie Doug Kramer who filled in immediately, and we've only seen Sam Mustipher at right guard.

Cody Whitehair isn’t practicing today. Could be a vet day.

So, no Lucas Patrick, Teven Jenkins and Whitehair.

Today’s Bears starting OL in team drills is as follows: LT Braxton Jones LG Zachary Thomas C Doug Kramer RG Ja’Tyre Carter RT Larry Borom

— Kevin Fishbain (@kfishbain) July 29, 2022

The Bears are already getting an early look at their offensive line depth. With Lucas Patrick injured, Doug Kramer is in at center. Fellow rookies Braxton Jones (LT) and Ja’Tyre Carter (RG) are also in with the ones. Teven Jenkins is not present. Cody Whitehair is not practicing.

— Chris Emma (@CEmma670) July 29, 2022

OL combination of Jones, Thomas, Kramer, Carter and Borom struggling in 11 on 11. A few pressures given up. #Bears.

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 29, 2022

On Gordon’s next snap, he locked up Mooney 1-on-1.

— Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. (@wiltfongjr) July 29, 2022

Justin Fields extended a play and placed the football high enough where only the 6-foot-5 Equanimeous St. Brown could get it. An improvised touchdown that got the crowd excited on the back fields of Halas Hall.

— Chris Emma (@CEmma670) July 29, 2022

On a broken play in team drills, Justin Fields ran around in the backfield (and probably would've been sacked), but the play went on and he found Equanimeous St. Brown in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 29, 2022

Equanimeous St. Brown had a nice catch on the sideline and held onto the ball as Gordon played through his hand. Good ball from Fields.

Later, he high-pointed a TD over Kindle Vildor. Good day for 19.

Pettis with a drop in the 1st red zone period.

— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) July 29, 2022

A lot of good offensive play designs (that I’m not allowed to describe). But they are getting Mooney and Kmet open and giving Fields easy throws. Playing to QB1’s strengths.

— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) July 29, 2022

Fields perfect in first two 7 on 7 sessions. Three straight TDs to Montgomery, Mooney and Harry

— Josh Schrock (@Schrock_And_Awe) July 29, 2022

For the final portion of practice, which was 7-on-7, Justin Fields completed every pass. Most of the passes were short gains. On the final two plays, Fields found Darnell Mooney for a TD. Then followed that up with a TD to N'Keal Harry in the flat to the right.
